5mol PCl5 (g) and one mol N2 gas is placed in a closed vessel.At equilibrium PCl5(g) decomposes by 20% and total pressure into the container is found to be 1atm .The Kp for equilibrium PCl5(g)==PCl3(g)+Cl2(g).

Answer:
given, mole of PCl5 = 5 mol
          mole of N2 = 1 mol,
 Now, when PCl5 is heated, its 20% dissociated,
         PCl5(g)    ---------------->  PCl3(g)    +    Cl2(g)
 t=o,   5 mole                             0                   0
 t ,      5- (5*0.2)                        5*0.2            5*0.2
          = 4                                  =1                 =1
Now, Total moles = mole of PCl5 + mole of PCl + mole of Cl2 + mole of N2
                         = 4 + 1 + 1 + 1 = 7 mole
So, mole fraction of PCl5 = 4/7
     mole fraction of PCl3  = 1/7
     mole fraction of Cl2   = 1/7
Now, from Dalton's law of partial pressure
       PPCl5 = mole fraction of PCl5 * Total pressure
                =  (4/7) * 1 = 4/7 atm
Similarly, PPCl3  = 1/7 atm
             PCl2  =  1/7 atm
Therefore, Kp  =  (PCl2 * PPCl3) / PPCl5
                      = (1/7 * 1/7)/(4/7)
                      = 1/28 atm
