  1. Right based approach: India is a democratic country. In the initial period after independence, the government considered citizens as 'beneficiaries. After the year 2000, the approach towards citizens changed. Democratic reforms were considered as 'rights' of citizens. Hence, the Right to Information, Education and Food Security was granted as rights of the citizens. This approach is known as Rights Based Approach.
  2. Right to Information: This Act was introduced in India in 2005. It was introduced in 2005 to increase transparency and accountability in government machinery. The RTI has increased communication between citizens and the government which has strengthened democracy. This is because under RTI, citizens have been given a right to know about the functioning of the government.
  3. Women representation in the Lok Sabha: In our country, from the very beginning, women have inadequate representation in politics and political institutions. In the Lok Sabha, the representation of women has remained extremely low. It was 4.50% in 1951-52 which has increased to only 12.15% in 2014. Women constitute 50% of the total population and hence in the Lok Sabha, their representation is far below the desired number.

  1. The voting age in India was reduced from 21 to 18 which enabled political participation of the young generation in India. Such provisions have made India the largest democracy in the world. India now has the largest number of voters compared to any other democratic nation.
  2. Social justice aims at removing those social conditions which are responsible for injustice and stress on the equality of dignity for all individuals. The principle of equality aims at ending discrimination in society based on caste, religion, language and gender, place of birth and race.
  3. The right to have an equal share in the property of the father and husband, Dowry Prohibition Act, act against sexual harassment, Domestic Violence Prohibition Act are some important provisions which create a favourable environment for protection of honour and dignity of women.
