  1. The number of people travelling back and forth from India has increased considerably due to the policy of economic liberalisation of the Indian government. Globalisation has made travelling easy from one to another country.
  2. India has a rich and varied history. Many of its monuments date back to the ancient period. Hence, it is important to take a few primary precautions to preserve the historical heritage sites. Places of historical monuments should not be vandalised and the walls of the monuments should not be scribbled on.

  1. Tradition of travelling
    • The tradition of travelling is very old in India. People travel in the past for various reasons like pilgrimage, going to local fairs and festivals, in search of a renowned teacher and good education, for trade, etc.
    • For example, Gautam Buddha travelled to far off places to preach his doctrines. Jain monks and saints frequently travelled to different places. Traders and merchants also travelled for business purposes.
  2. Marco-polo
    • Marco Polo was an Italian traveller of the 13th century. He introduced Asia, especially China to Europe. He stayed in China for 17 years. He wrote about the flora and fauna, social life, culture and trade systems of Asia.
  3. Agro tourism
    • Agro-tourism is rapidly developing. It is meant for the urban population which wants to experience rural life and agriculture.
    • Indian farmers are also visiting faraway places like agricultural research centres, agricultural universities and countries like Israel which have developed sophisticated and advanced agricultural technology.

  1. Crucial issues in the development of tourism:
    • Providing proper guidance to national and international tourists about various aspects of the actual travel, proper social conduct during the tour and during their stay at the destination places
    • Priority should be given to ensure safe transport and security facilities for the tourists.
    • Amenities of reasonably good standard, availability of good accommodation, good washroom facilities on the travel routes are of great significance in promoting tourism. It is also very important to pay special attention to the special needs of handicapped tourists.
  2. Tourism as a major source of livelihood:
    • Tourist places are visited by thousands of people all the year around. It is a major source of livelihood.
    • On places of historical importance, guides are hired by the tourist to tell them about the history of the place.
    • At some places photographers are present to click nice pictures for the tourists.
    • Tourists also provide a mode of living to the locals by riding their horse, elephants, camels, ponies etc.
    • Tourists also buy handicrafts and famous local goods from the local people.
  3. Steps I will take develop the surroundings of my village /town to help the growth of tourism:
    • Create awareness among people to take steps for preserving buildings and monuments in the village/town.
    • I will keep my area and locality clean and will teach people to help and respect tourists
    • Will take steps to set up a local centre showcasing regional culture, traditions, art, handicrafts etc as tourists are interested in all these aspects of culture.
    • Will visit small hotels in the area and will tell them about the importance of providing decent and clean faculties to the tourists.

    • Travel agents and guides help tourists in arranging the tour of the city/buildings

    • Hotels, lodging and boarding services provide comfortable travel and stay to the tourists
    • Transport services required by tourists such as bus, autorickshaw and taxi, get much needed business
    • A revival or boost to Handicraft and Cottage industry resulting in economic well-being of the skilled craftsmen.

Historical tourism

  • In ancient times, Lord Buddha along with his followers visited various places to spread his teachings. Yuan Shwang, the Chinese monk travelled to India in 630 CE.
  • People often visit places of historical importances.
  • Historical tours are arranged to important historical sites in India such as Aurangabad (Ajanta and Ellora Caves), forts in Rajasthan, Ashrams of Gandhi and Vinoba Bhave and places related to the Indian war of independence in 1857.

Geographic Tourism

  • This kind of tourism is undertaken to explore various geographic and physical features of a region. It includes beaches, sanctuaries, valleys and mountains.
  • Crater lake at Lonar and 'Ranjankhalage' (naturally carved out cavities in rocks) at Nighoj in Maharashtra are very famous.

Agro-Tourism

  • Agro tourism is rapidly developing. It is meant for the urban population which wants to experience rural life and agriculture.
