  1. Art: Art is an expression of human instincts resulting in a beautiful creation. It can be dance, music, architecture etc.
  2. Hemadpanti style: It is an architectural style in which the outer walls of the temples are built in star shape having a zig zag design. This results into an interesting effect of alternating light and shadow. The walls are built without using any mortar, by locking the stones by using the technique of tenon and mortise joints.
  3. Maratha style of painting: The Maratha style of painting began to develop in the latter half of the 17th century C.E. This style consists of coloured paintings and they occur as murals and also miniatures used in manuscripts. The Maratha style was influenced by the Rajput and European styles of painting.

  1. Folk style of painting:
    • Rock paintings have been discovered in several Indian states.
    • Usually, humans, animals and geometric figures have been depicted in rock paintings. These paintings show cultural changes from stone ages to the beginning of agriculture
    • The tradition of folk style of painting closely resembles the style of rock painting.
    • Customs such as decorating the house walls and courtyard by drawing various figures and symbols helped in developing regional styles of  folk paintings.
    • Warli painting is also a style of folk painting. Jivya Somya Mashe, the artist in Thane has played a major role in making this style of painting popular.
  2. Islamic style of architecture:
    • In the medieval period, under the patronage of Muslim sultanates many styles of architecture, such as Persian, Central Asian, Arabic and pre-Islamic native Indian styles were blended together creating the Islamic architecture of India.
    • The Qutb Minar, Taj Mahal and Gol Gumbaz are some styles of Islamic architecture.
    • QutbMinar is the highest minaret in the world. It is declared as World heritage site. The Taj Mahal was built by Shah Jahan in the memory of his wife, Mumtaz Mahal. It epitomises the beauty of Islamic architecture in India. The Gol Gumbaz at Bijapur in Karnataka was built in the 17 CE. One of its unique features is that a slight whisper in the gallery of this monument can be heard everywhere.
