Solution 1

The surroundings where an organism lives is known as habitat.

Concept insight: Habitat is the place where an organism live.

Solution 2

Following are the adaptations of cactus:
i. Leaves are modified into spines.
ii. Stem are green and store water. Green stem perform the function of photosynthesis.
iii. Stem is covered with a thick waxy coating which prevents transpiration.

Concept insight: Cactus grows in desert so to minimize water loss, its stem has turned fleshy and leaves are reduced to spines.

a)     Adaptation

Concept insight: Adaptations help an organism to survive in its habitat.

b)    Terrestrial

Concept insight: Animals and plants that live on land are said to live in terrestrial habitats.

c)    Aquatic

      Concept insight:  Organisms which live in water are called aquatic organisms.

d)    Abiotic

      Concept insight: Non-living components of environment are called abiotic factors.

e)    Stimuli

Concept insight: Stimuli are the changes in the environment of an organism.

Non-living things in the following list are:

Common characteristics of living things are:
i. Living things need food.
ii. They grow with age.
iii. They respire.
iv. They respond to stimuli.
v. They excrete waste.
vi. They reproduce.
vii. They move from one place to another.

In grasslands, mainly grasses are found. Trees are very few in number. Predators such as lion, tiger, etc. that feed upon other animals are commonly found in these regions. It is very easy for these predators to locate their prey in the grass. Therefore, to protect themselves from these predators, animals adapt themselves by increasing their speed. The increased speed of the animals help them to escape their predator, thereby protecting themselves and increasing the chances of their survival.
