Question 1/20

Q 1. What is the additive inverse of −12?

Solution

The additive inverse of −12 is 12.

Q 2. 6 + (− 10) =

Solution

6 + (−10) = 6 - 10 = −4

Q 3. The predecessor of −15 is

Solution

The predecessor of −15 is −16.

Q 4. The set of integers is denoted by the letter

Solution

The set of integers is denoted by the letter I.

Q 5. Write the proper sign at the place of #. 63 - 36 - 45 # 96 - 69 + 54

Solution

63 - 36 + 45 = 72 and 96 - 69 + 54 = 81

Here, 72 < 81.

Q 6. 5 - (−12) =

Solution

5 - (−12) = 5 + 12 = 17

Q 7. Which of the following statements is incorrect?

Solution

Addition of one positive and negative number may or may not be negative.

For example, if we take the two numbers 5 and −2, 5 + (−2) = 5 - 2 = 3.

Here, addition of one positive and negative number is positive. In this case, the sign depends on the bigger number.

Q 8. Which of the following numbers is greater than −15?

Solution

−14, −7 and −3 are on the right side of the number −15.

Q 9. The number system comprising natural numbers, their negatives and 0 is called the system of

Solution

The number system comprising natural numbers, their negatives and 0 is called the system of integers.

Q 10. The income of a typist is Rs. 10 per page, but Re. 1 is deducted for each mistake. If the typist has made 2 mistakes on one page, then the income of the typist will be

Solution

Income of a typist for one page = Rs. 10

For each mistake, Re. 1 is deducted.

Hence, for 2 mistakes, Rs. 2 will be deducted.

Income of the typist for one page = 10 - 2 × 1 = Rs. 8.

Q 11. Which of the following number is greater than −9?

Solution

−8 is the right side of −9.

Q 12. Renuka deposited an amount of Rs. 6000 in her bank account, and she withdrew an amount of Rs. 2000 for her expenses. Find the balance in Renuka’s account.

Solution

Here, the withdrawal of the amount from the account is represented by a negative integer.

Hence, Rs. 6000 - Rs. 2000 = Rs. 4000.

Renuka’s balance in the bank account is Rs. 4000.

Q 13. The successor of −12 is

Solution

The successor of −12 is −11.

Q 14. Natural numbers do not include

Solution

Natural numbers do not include negative numbers and zero.

Q 15.    A person is at position A, and he moves to position B. What will be the distance between position B and zero?

Solution

Position A indicates the number 3 and position B indicates the number −2. Hence, the difference of the number −2 from zero is 2.

Q 16. Negative numbers are ____ positive numbers.

Solution

Negative numbers are smaller than positive numbers.

Q 17. Positive integers are marked by equidistant points on a straight line to the right of

Solution

Positive integers are marked by equidistant points on a straight line to the right of zero.

Q 18. If a person is at position −6 and he will reach position 2 on a number line, then what will be the distance covered by him?

Solution

Distance travelled by a person = 2 - (-6) = 2 + 6 = 8 units.

Q 19. The income of a typist is Rs. 10 per page. Re. 1 is deducted for each mistake. If 2 mistakes are found in each page of 100, then what will the income of the typist?

Solution

Total number of pages = 100

For 2 mistakes per page,

Total number of mistakes = 2 × 100 = 200

Total income = 10 × 100 - 1 × 200 = Rs. 800

Q 20. Find 15 + (−37) - (−40).

Solution

15 + (−37) - (−40)

= 15 - 37 + 40

= 15 + 40 - 37

= 55 - 37

= 18
