Seth G.S. Medical College was started in 1926 and is one of the top 15 medical colleges in India. It is an institute open to 2000 medical students every year and has about 390 staff physicians and 550 resident doctors. The college has 1800 beds for students to practise.

Stanley Medical College was started in 1938. It is ranked 11 among all the medical colleges in India. Stanley Medical College was the first college in Tamil Nadu to get 250 MBBS seats, recorded in 2013-14. Stanley College has over 1300 beds for treatment and has an outpatient attendance of about 5000 patients a day. The college has an 8-storey surgical complex which can perform up to 40 surgeries simultaneously. VMMC & Safdarjung Hospital was started in 1942 during the Second World War as a base hospital for the Allied forces. The college came into existence in about 1962 and has since been teaching medicine.
