The average figures hide variations between trades and the fluctuations from year to year because they are not adjusted to inflation. The wages of workers increased somewhat in the 19th century. However, if compared to the inflation caused by the wars and famines of the same period, the purchasing value of these wages comes down significantly. Also, the amount and recognition of the services provided also played a role in the final determination of the workers' wages.
