A:

Dear Kush,

The Revolt of 1857 is the first Indian revolt for independence against the British government.

In 1856, the British authorities introduced the Enfield rifle in the Company army. The loading process of the Enfield rifle involved biting off of the top greased paper of the cartridge with one’s teeth. In January 1857, there was a rumour in the Bengal regiments that the greased cartridge had the fat of the cow or pig. The sepoys were convinced that this was a deliberate ploy to defile Hindu and Muslim soldiers. As a result, both Hindu and Muslim soldiers refused to use the new rifle and staged an uprising when forced to use them. This started the  1857 rebellion.
