Hi Ashlesha,

Earthing: If due to some reason such as short circuiting, excessive current flows through the line wires which will pass to the earth through the earth wire if there is local earthing, otherwise the line wires may get overheated and it may cause a fire.

For earthing of an electrical appliance which we handle physically, the earth wire of the cable is connected to the outer metallic case of the appliance. 

 

Overloading:

When too many electrical appliances are connected to a single socket, they draw an extremely large current from the household circuit. This is called overloading. The flow of current due to overloading may heat the copper wires of household wiring to be a very high temperature and a fire may be caused.
