Q:

An organic compound X with molecular formula C2H5O is colourless in nature having freezing point 156 K and boiling point 351 K.It is soluble in water in all proportions.Identify X.(1) what happens when X reacts with sodium metal (2) when X is heated with excess of conc.H2SO4 at 443 K, it forms an unsaturated compound 2Y.What is Y?

A:

X = Ethanol

(1) It gives out hydrogen gas and forms sodium ethoxide when reacts with sodium metal.

(2) When ethanol is heated with excess of conc.H2SO4 at 443 K, it forms an unsaturated compound that is ethene.

So, Y = Ethene
