Hi Sneha,

chromosome is a DNA molecule with part or all of the genetic material (genome) of an organism. 

In sexually reproducing organisms, the gamete formation involves meiosis that reduces the number of chromosomes to half. But the chromosome number gets doubled again after the fertilisation of gametes to form zygote. In this way, chromosome number is maintained in sexually reproducing organisms.
