Hi Vikas,

A flower is monocarpellary if it has a single carpel and multicarpellary if it has more than one carpel.

When you cut the transverse section of the carpel and observe the section of ovary, look for the chamber or locules in the ovary and the number, distribution and arrangement of placenta in the ovary.

  • If the ovary is unilocular with marginal placentation, then the gynoecium would be monocarpellary.
  • If the ovary is multilocular with parietal or superficial placentation, then the gynoecium would be multicarpellary.

You will not observe marginal placentation in case of multicarpellary gynoecium.
