Hi Nisha,
1. Net yield of aerobic respiration per glucose molecule: 36 ATP
Total Yield of ATP from Respiration = Net ATP Gain (Glycolysis + Oxidative Phosphorylation of Pyruvic acid + Krebs cycle)
= 8 + 30
= 38 ATP
= 38 − 2 ATP
= 36 ATP
In eukaryotic cells, glycolysis occurs in the cytoplasm and the Krebs cycle occurs in the mitochondrion.
Hence, two molecules of NADH produced during glycolysis must be transported to the inner membrane of the mitochondrion for ATP synthesis.
The inner mitochondrial membrane is impermeable to NADH molecules; hence, its transport requires one ATP molecule per molecule of NADH.
Therefore, the net ATP production is decreased by two.
Hence, the total yield of ATP is 36.
