Lubdhaka a poor tribal man once went into the forest to collect firewood. As darkness blanketed the jungle, he lost his way. For seeking protection from the creatures of the jungle, he climbed a tree and decided to spend the night there. To keep himself from falling asleep at night, he began plucking leaves from the tree and dropping them on the ground while chanting Shiva's name, not knowing that below the tree was a Shiva lingam. Also the tree was a Bael tree, another of Shiva's favorite. Lubdhaka’s all night worship pleased Lord Shiva and by his divine grace tigers and other wild animals went away. Thus, Lubdhaka not only survived but was also rewarded with divine bliss.
