World Environment Day is celebrated on 5 June every year with an aim to protect nature and raise awareness on environmental factors and challenges.
The United Nations General Assembly established the concept of World Environment Day in 1972 to mark the opening of the Stockholm Conference on the Human Environment.
The first World Environment Day was observed in 1973. The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) takes care of the concept of World Environment Day.
Several awareness campaigns are conducted ahead of World Environment Day to create awareness among people on how to safeguard the environment.
Every year, World Environment Day is observed in different cities with different themes. The theme of World Environment Day 2013 was ‘THINK. EAT. SAVE.’
The aim of World Environment Day 2014 is to focus on small islands and climate change, and the slogan for the same is ‘RAISE YOUR VOICE NOT THE SEA LEVEL’.
In 2011, UNEP selected India as the global host country for World Environment Day. The slogan was ‘Forest: Nature at your Service’.
