Deficiency of thyroxine results in cretinism in children. 

People living in hilly areas suffer from goitre because the soil in these areas is deficient in iodine. This results in less thyroxine production. 

Testes in males secrete the male sex hormone called testosterone, while ovaries in females secrete the female sex hormone called oestrogen and progesterone. 

Goitre is caused by the deficiency of thyroxine hormone secreted by the thyroid gland.
