Animal classification refers to the arrangement of animals in taxonomic groups according to their observed similarities and evolutionary relationships. Animal classification makes possible the study of the huge diversity of animals. It also helps scientists to study the relationships in animal groups and to see the whole animal family tree as it has developed through time.

The animal kingdom is classified on the basis of levels of organisation, body symmetry, germinal layers, nature of coelom, segmentation and presence of notochord.

The kingdom Animalia is further divided into the following phyla:

  •  Porifera
  • Coelenterata
  • Platyhelminthes
  • Nematoda
  • Annelida
  • Arthropoda
  • Mollusca
  • Echinodermata
  • Hemichordata
  • Chordata
