Why is a mixture of common salt and concentrated sulphuric acid used in place of HCl in the preparation of chlorine with the help of manganese dioxide?

This method is used as a modification of the first method (i.e .preparation of chlorine from HCl).In case HCl is not present, it can be formed by reacting NaCl and sulfuric acid. The HCl that is formed from NaCl and sulfuric acid is immediately oxidized to chlorine.
