Why does the sun look whitish-yellow in the afternoon?

In the afternoon, the Sun is nearly overhead. The sunlight has to pass through much smaller portion of Earth's atmosphere. The scattering is much less than at the time of sunrise and sunset (i.e. when the Sun looks reddish) anf hence the Sun looks in its usual whitish-yellow colour.
