What happens to a cell when it is placed in a hyper-tonic solution. Explain your answer using technical terms.
Hypertonic solution means that the medium has a lower concentration of water than the cell i.e. (concentrated solution). When the cell is placed in hypertonic solution, the cell will lose water by osmosis.
Water molecules are free to pass across the cell membrane in both directions, but more water leaves the cell than enters it. The net result is that water leaves the cell. Therefore the cell will shrink.
