Question
Sir, I am not able to understand this question. Please explain. A rectangular lawn, 75m by 60m, has two roads, each 4 m wide, running through the middle of the lawn, one parallel to length and the other parallel to breadth. Find the cost of gravelling the roads at Rs 45 per m2.
Expert Reply
Area of road parallel to length = 75 x 4 = 300 m^{2}
Area of road parallel to breadth = 60 x 4 = 240 m^{2}
Here, the overlapping region is considered twice.
It is a square of side 4 m at the intersection of the two roads in the middle.
So, total area to be considered = (300 + 240)  (4 x 4) = 524 m^{2}
Cost of gravelling = Rs 45 X 524 = Rs 23580
