There are shells in which electrons revolve.Within each shell, subshells lie i.e. s,p,d,f which stands for group of spectral lines as sharp, principal, diffuse and fundamental. In the terms of quantum number it is the set of  states defined by common azimuthal quantum number ,l, within the shell. The value l =0,1,2,3 corresponds to s,p,d,f respectively. It is used to give shape of the electronic orbitals.
