A ball is dropped from a height of 5m above a heap of sand. it is found to penetrate 30cm in the sand if the mass of the ball is 200g. Find the resistive force exerted by sand on the ball

the velocity of the ball when it is just above the ground, v = (2gH)^1/2 = 10 m/s (g=10m/s2)
m = 0.2kg
distance travelled in sand, s = 0.3 m
thus acceleration, a = v2/2s = 500/3 m/s2
thus force = ma = 100/3 N
