It was previously believed that zebras were white animals with black stripes, since some zebras have white underbellies. However, it makes more sense to believe that animal's background color is black with white stripes. This is because the pattern on zebra is a result of pigment activation (black) and inhibition (white). In simpler terms, it means that black is the actual color of the fur, and the white patches are simply the areas that lack pigmentation. To top it off, most zebras have dark skin beneath their fur.
