  1. Eastern Highlands:
  • Two highlands- the Guiana Highlands in the north and Brazilian Highlands in the east together make the Eastern Highlands.
  • The Patagonian Plateau situated here is a cold desert.
  • Both highlands are made up of old rocks and are the storehouse of many minerals. 
  • The highest water fall, the Angel Falls in Venezuela is located in these highlands.
  • The Parana and the Paraguay rivers rise in the Brazilian Highlands.
  1. Central lowlands:
  • The Central Lowlands lie between the Andes Mountains and the Eastern Highlands.
  • More than half of the total area of the continent is occupied by these lowlands.
  • They consist of three large river basins. The Orinoco Basin, the Amazon and the La Plata are three main rivers of the region. River Amazon is the second longest river in the world.
