Non-Metals

  • They are present on the left side of the periodic table.
  • They are present on the right side of the periodic table.
  • They have large atomic radii and low ionisation potential.
  • They have small atomic radii and high ionisation potential.
  • They tend to lose electrons.
  • They tend to gain electrons.
  • Metals are good reducing agents.
  • Non-metals are good oxidising agents.
  • They are good conductors of heat and electricity.
  • They are bad conductors of heat and electricity.
  • They have generally high melting and boiling points.
  • They have generally low melting and boiling points.
  • Metallic character increases as we go down the group.
  • Non-metallic character increases as we move from left to right along the period.
  • They are malleable and ductile.
  • They are neither malleable nor ductile.
  • They are good conductors of heat and electricity.
  • They are poor conductors of heat and electricity.
  • They are lustrous.
  • They are non-lustrous.
  • They are strong and have high tensile strength.
