The Treaty of Lateran was made with the Pope by Mussolini in the year 1929. Under this Treaty, the Pope agreed to accept a subordinate position to Mussolini and recognised the authority of the Italian national government over Rome. In return for this important recognition of the power of the State over religion, the Pope was allowed to retain his possession of the Vatican and the St. Peter’s Cathedral. The Fascist government also recognised the Roman Catholic religion as the State religion.
