The capital of the Arab empire under the Abbasid Caliphs was shifted to Baghdad where a House of Wisdom was established. Many texts belonging to the ancient civilisations like the Greek, Egyptian, Chinese, India and the Byzantine were translated into Arabic. Baghdad became a repository and preserve of the rich cultural heritage of the Ancient World.
