On 11 June 1776, representatives of the British-American colonies appointed a committee to compose the document of the Declaration of Independence. The committee consisted of Thomas Jefferson, John Adams and Benjamin Franklin. On the fateful day of 4 July 1776, the Declaration of Independence was officially adopted. The document proclaimed the right of the colonists to emancipate themselves from British rule and form a government of their own. The 4^th of July has since then been celebrated as Independence Day in the United States of America.
