Expert Answer
The sporophyte is a multicellular body attached to the gametophyte. It derives nourishment from the gametophyte.
When antherozoids are released in water, they come in contact with the archegonium. Their fusion leads to the formation of a zygote which develops into a sporophyte.
Cells of the sporophyte undergo reduction division to produce haploid spores. The haploid spores germinate to produce a gametophyte.
