India provided considerable support to Myanmar when it struggled with regional insurgencies. However, the overthrow of the democratic government by the military in Myanmar led to strains in ties. India condemned the suppression of democracy and as a result, Myanmar ordered the expulsion of the Burmese Indian community. Of late the relationship between the two countries have improved considerably. India is trying its best to strengthen its relations with it in wake of increasing Chinese influence in the South East Asian region. India also has good trade relations with Myanmar. India is the largest market for Burmese exports, buying about US$ 220 million worth of goods in 2000; India's exports to Burma stood at US $75.36 million.
