The name Carnatic refers to the region occupied by the Kannada -speaking people in the modern Indian state of Karnataka (formerly Mysore).
The Carnatic Wars were a series of military contests that took place between the British, the French , the Marathas, and Mysore for control of the coastal strip of eastern India from Nellore towards the south.
Commercial and maritime rivalries between France and England was one of the primary reason behind these wars. Both the French and the English East India Companies wanted to extend their influence in the south. The British emerged victorious in these Carnatic wars and the French company was now present in the areas around Pondicherry only.
