The Ashokan edicts are a source of valuable information of the period of the Mauryas. Edicts are royal commands or proclamations. They were inscribed on rocks, polished stone pillars and caves. They were composed in Prakrit, the language of the common people and written in the Brahmi script. In the northwest, they were written in Greek, Kharoshthi and Aramaic.
