Current flow through an electro magnetic coil pulls on an arm which converts it to mechanical energy. This movement opens the contacts on an electrical switch which opens and causes the current to stop flowing. The arm is returned to its original position by a spring which was stretched when the arm was first pulled by the magnet. The switch closes and the process repeats until the applied power is removed. This is one type of a bell or buzzer design. There are others.
