The British imperialists encouraged the foundation of the Muslim League. The aims behind this were:
  •  The British wanted to rule India for a longer period of time. They realised that the Hindu Muslim unity will threaten their rule. Hence, they encouraged commmunal politics by following the policy of 'Divide and Rule'.
  • The British were of the opinion that the formation of the Muslim league will counter the effects of the Congress.
