With the increase in altitude why does the pressure exerted by the atmosphere decreases?

The air that extends above the earth’s surface in different layers is called the atmosphere. The pressure exerted by the atmosphere is called atmospheric pressure. Atmospheric pressure decreases with height. Also, at higher altitudes the density of air decreases due to which the atmospheric pressure decreases.
Thus we can say that atmospheric pressure decreases with increase in altitude due to:
- Decrease in the height of the air column
- Decrease in the density of air
