Expert Answer
- The British colonial government purposefully spread the propaganda that Indians were uncivilized people and had never been able to rule themselves properly. They contrived facts in order to popularise this view through the media and the education system. However, scholars like William Jones, Max Mueller, Charles Wilkins, Marshall, etc. showed through their research that India had a rich cultural heritage. This gradually led to a realisation of India’s ancient art, literature and philosophy, in turns giving rise to self-confidence, patriotism and nationalism among people.
- The contribution of Bipin Chandra Pal was as follows:
- He joined the Indian National Congress in the year 1887.
- He joined the Brahmo Samaj.
- He served as the editor of ‘New India’.
- He joined the Aggressive Nationalist group within the Congress in the year 1907.
- He demanded Swaraj and supported national education.
- He opposed the partition of Bengal.
- In the beginning, before the Congress had found a base among the middle classes or the masses in general, the British attitude towards the Congress was friendly and modest. The British understood that the goal of the Congress was self government within the empire. Lord Dufferin even thought that the Congress would serve as a safety valve for popular discontent against the colonial administration. The government later changed its attitude because it became clear that the Congress now attracted wide membership and was becoming gradually radicalized.
