Dear student,
Some important properties of equipotential surfaces : |
Work done in moving a charge over an equipotential surface is zero.
The electric field is always perpendicular to an equipotential surface.
The spacing between equipotential surfaces enables us to identify regions of strong and weak fields.
Two equipotential surfaces can never intersect. If two equipotential surfaces could intersect, then at the point of intersection there would be two values of electric potential which is not possible.
an equipotential surface may be the surface of a material body or a surface drawn in an electric field. The change in voltage is defined as the work done per unit charge against the electric field. If a charge is moved along a path at right angles (i.e., perpendicular) to the field lines, there is no work done (W = 0) since there is no force component along the path. No work means no potential difference from point to point. Hence, the potential is constant along paths perpendicular to field lines. Such paths are called equipotentials Hence no potential differnce, no work done. Hope this helps. Team Topperlearning.com |
