We know that atomic nuclei consist of closely packed protons and neutrons. There very large repulsive force between the protons within the nuclei which is balanced by the much stronger nuclear force between the nucleons. Stability of a nucleus is determined by its neutron proton ratio. Lighter nuclei are more stable as they have almost same number of proton and neutron.ie n/p ratio almost equal to one.On the other hand heavy nuclei (atomic number greater than 1) are unstable. For heavier nuclei to become stable they need to have more number of neutrons because more the number of protons in the nucleus greater is the repulsive force between them due to which they remain unstable. So heavier nuclei undergo disintegration or decay into lighter nuclei to become stable nuclei.
This property by which heavy elements disintegrate itself without the influence of any external agent is known as radioactivity.
So heavier nuclei undergo disintegration to attain stability.
