Why did the British conquer India: The Indian textiles and spices were renowned all over the world. The British came to India as traders. Later, they realised that they main gain tremendously from Indian trade, if they annex the country. Also, India was not politically united at this time.

When and how: It was in June 1757 that the Battle of Plassey was fought. This made the British the master of Bengal. Gradually, they went on to conquer almost the entire nation.
