Expert Answer
By the end of eighteenth century, England was importing Chinese silk and tea in large quantities. Tea had become an important drink in England. It was realised by the government that purchasing tea from China would result in huge outflow of currency from Britain to China and would deplete its wealth. In order to stop this flow of bullion from the country, Britain decided to export opium to China. Through the money earned through opium trade, the British were able to purchase tea from China.
