Why the period 3 of the periodic table has 8 elements

The Aufbau’s principle states that, in the ground state of the atoms, the orbitals are filled in order of their increasing energies.

So there are only eight elements that satisfy this.

The third period should contain 18 elements but there are ten electrons which have high energy which is equivalent to the fourth shell and electrons will not occupy the third shell.
