Why structure of DNA is compared to a ladder?

answered-by-expert Expert Answer

Each DNA strand is composed of repeating nucleotides.

Nucleotides are made of three components- phosphate, deoxyribose sugar arranged lengthwise and a nitrogenous base attached to the sugar inwards which extends to join (by a hydrogen bond) the complementary nitrogenous base from the other strand.

Thus, the two strands together make a ladder like arrangement with nitrogenous base forming"rungs" of the ladder. Therefore, the structure of DNA is compared to a ladder.
