Why reproduction is not taken as a defining feature of a living being, although non-living being do not reproduce?

Answer:

There are several organisms which never reproduce in their life, although all other characteristic of living things are present in them. For example, sterile worker bees and mules. Even in human beings, some infertile couples cannot repeorudce under natural conditions. Hence, reproduction cannot be considered as a defining feature of living beings.
