CBSE Class 12-science Answered
Why p orbitals don't have degenerate orbital like t2g and eg in d obital? In t2g & eg which has higher energy?

Expert Answer
In an isolated atom, the three p orbitals in a given shell are said to be degenerate, since they all have the same energy level.
The energy of t2g and eg depend on the geometry of the complex. If the complex is tetrahedral then energy of t2g is higher than eg and if the complex is octahedral than reverse is true i.e. energy of eg is higher than t2g.
