Expert Answer
- A flame, moreover a matchstick flame in this case, is a mixture of oxygen present in the surrounding air and the burning matchstick.
- While the matchstick is burning, the air in and around it becomes hot.
- Its a known phenomenon that with the increase in temperature, air pressure decreases and thus it rises upwards.
- This rising of hot air leaves the cool air at the bottom of the flame which is then used to supply oxygen for burning.
- So this creates an upward shape of the flame and it appears that the flame is against the gravity but, it is not true.
