The reason why light has a tendency to take the path which takes less time can be explained by Fermat's principle.
It states that “light travels between two points along the path that requires the least time, as compared to other nearby paths.”
From Fermat’s principle, one can also derive
- The law of reflection [the angle of incidence is equal to the angle of reflection]
- The law of refraction.

And not just the light, even the electric current flows through the path of minimum resistance.
This is a common tendency shown by natural propagation of transmission of energies,
they always chose the path of minimum resistance.
