why is the magnification of real images taken as negative and for virtual it is taken as positive?

Expert Answer
When we say that an real and inverted image is formed, the height of the image formed is below the pricipal axis. Also, virtual images are erct and always formed above the pricipal axis. Thus, according to the sign conventions it is taken as negative.
Similarily, the height of the virtual images is in the upward direction and taken as positive.
