CBSE Class 12-science Answered

Why is Silicon more frequently used than Germanium given that the energy required to jump the forbidden band for Germium is lesser than Silicon?

There are few reasons behind using Silicon over Germanium, but the primary and most important reason is that Silicon is cheaper than Germanium because of its abundance.

Other reasons include:

a) At room temperature, Silicon has fewer free electrons than Germanium. This implies that silicon will have much smaller collector cut-off current than Germanium.

b) Germanium has a reverse breakdown voltage of the order of 50-70 V while Si can withstand up to 100 V.
